Cold Compression Therapy in University Heights.

Swelling is what keeps a joint stiff, sore and slow to bend. Controlled cold and steady pressure take it out of the equation early, so the real work can start.

What It Is

Ice sits there. This moves the swelling out.

Cold compression therapy is a sleeve that wraps the joint and does two jobs at the same time. Cold water circulates through it at a controlled temperature. While that is happening the sleeve inflates and releases in a slow, repeating cycle, so the limb is being squeezed and let go while it is being cooled.

The combination is the whole point. Cold quiets the pain signals coming out of an angry joint. The pressure moves swelling out of the tissue and back into circulation instead of letting it pool. Swelling is what makes a knee feel like a football and refuse to bend, so clearing it early is what lets everything else in your plan begin.

It is not a bag of ice taped to your leg. A bag of ice warms up, sits in one spot, and does nothing about the fluid. This is a set temperature, a set cycle and a set time. A licensed physical therapist watches your skin and the clock, so you are not doing it by feel on the kitchen counter.

What It Helps

When the swelling is the thing in the way.

You are the one who said you were fine and drove yourself home. An hour with the leg up feels like an hour wasted. It is usually the hour that decides how the next two weeks go.

What A Session Looks Like

What twenty minutes looks like.

1

We fit the sleeve over the joint and set the temperature. Cold, not painful. You tell us the moment it stops being comfortable.

2

The cycle starts. Pressure builds slowly, holds, then lets go. Most people describe it as a firm hug that keeps releasing.

3

The sleeve comes off and we move the joint while it is calm and quiet. That window is the entire reason we did this.

Why It Works

Four things less swelling buys you.

The joint bends further, and sooner.

Evenings stop being the worst part of the day.

The exercises you could not tolerate become doable.

The next phase of your plan starts on time.

Questions, Answered

Cold and pressure, no mystery.

It is cold, and the first couple of minutes are the coldest it will feel. After that most people settle in, and describe the pressure as a firm squeeze that keeps letting go. A licensed physical therapist sets the temperature and the time, checks your skin during the session, and changes anything you ask to have changed. Cold is not right for everybody. If you have reduced sensation in the limb, a known cold sensitivity or a circulation problem, tell us, and we will calm the joint a different way.

This is rarely the whole plan. Cold compression does the most good early, in the days and weeks when swelling is the thing blocking your motion. As the joint settles we use it less and load you more, which is the direction we want. Your evaluation gives you a plan with an endpoint, so you know when this piece stops and the next one begins.
